#FacebookIDPlusVideoValidationPlease

[Updated 06/09/2020: I stand corrected. 🙂 A friend kindly pointed out the risk of submitting IDs to social networks, especially in case a breach of data occurs. I admit she has a very valid point. I guess I was just so gung-ho to stamp out creators of fake accounts that I overlooked the risks of ID submission 😂 (though in fairness, I wasn’t thinking of uploading a main government-issued ID, but a secondary ID with a photo confirming one’s identity). However, while I do agree that ID validation is not a good idea after all, I still stand by my #FacebookVideoValidationIdea (for existing accounts, not new accounts). Although video validation will not be useful for authenticating new accounts without the support of ID validation, it may possibly be helpful to use a confirmation video to validate existing accounts. Facebook can ask users to submit a video saying a certain line (e.g. “I am [Name] and I am confirming today [Date] that I am the owner of the account [Account Name]”) to make sure that the person in the video matches the one in the existing profile pictures for an existing account. Then perhaps Facebook can give a blue check mark to users who have successfully validate their accounts (parang artista lang!). How should Facebook validate new accounts though? At this point, to be honest, I have no idea yet. 🤣 But I will keep on thinking about it. Please share if you have any good ideas. I’ve decided to keep this post and not delete it, mainly so those who’ve read my original post can also read this erratum, but also so that people will know that it’s okay: 1) To admit you are wrong, 2) To learn from other people, and 3) To improve and fine-tune your ideas. Di naman kailangan lagi tayong magaling. 🙌 None of us are perfect, but we can always, always grow & improve every single day. Stay safe & God bless, everyone! 🙏]

Original Post on 06/08/2020: #FacebookIDPlusVideoValidationPlease Can we request Facebook to implement new validation methods? 1) Official IDs + 2) Video of FB User confirming ownership of each account (a video, not a photo, which is easier to copy, edit & re-upload). These methods can be used to approve new accounts & to verify existing accounts. Each user who has successfully completed these new authentication steps can have a blue validation check mark added to his/her homepage (similar to what some public figures & celebrities now have).

Dear Facebook & Instagram Management, we respectfully request that you implement additional security measures to increase online safety & to reduce the creation of clone accounts. I know we already have basic password protection, plus the optional third party authentication app & the text/SMS message codes, but we need to step up security during these challenging times. Please. For our mutual peace of mind. So that we will continue to feel safe using the Facebook social media app that has been a big part of our lives. Thank you.
