“Moymoy Lulumboy 5: Ang Lihim ng Libro”, which chronicles the latest exciting adventures of the half-human, half-tibaro boy whom many Filipino readers have grown to love, was launched by Lampara Books last September 14, 2018 during the 39th Manila International Book Fair at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia (MOA). Since this is already the fifth book, I was curious to find out what makes it stand out from the earlier installments of the successful fantasy book series.
During the MIBF 2018 book launch, I interviewed the author, Mr. Segundo “Jun” Matias, Jr., and the illustrator, Mr. Jomike Tejido, about what makes their latest young adult novel different from the first four Moymoy books.
“It’s more mature. It will give you an experience na naiiba [kumpara] sa mga naunang libro,” Sir Jun thoughtfully reflected on “Ang Lihim ng Libro”. “Dito, makikita mong mas gumagalaw na si Moymoy. Nagdedesisyon na talaga [siya]. Dati kasi parang mas nag-o-observe lang siya. [Ngayon], sa daloy ng kuwento, siya na talaga yung mas active.” Indeed, Moymoy has taken an increasingly proactive role in unfolding his destiny as the story progressed over the years.
According to Sir Jun, Moymoy’s language has also evolved as he grows older. “At tsaka yung lingo niya, even my voice, mas pinalitan ko,” Sir Jun shared about the writing process. “Hindi na masyadong safe, medyo matapang na ngayon.”
Even the illustrations of the latest book have reflected the growth of Moymoy. “Sa illustration part… siyempre nagiging teenager na sila so kailangan mas mature na yung pag drawing [compared] sa previous characters,” Jomike explained. “Yung sa style pareho pa rin, pero mas targeted for teens na. Maganda dito ay nabigyan ng light yung ibang characters.”
Jomike also enthusiastically shared: “Without any spoilers, [there are] more monsters and more teen roles.” Moymoy fans who love thrilling drawings definitely have a treat in store for them as they read Book 5!
Mr. Eugene Evasco, a prolific author who was also present at the book launch, gamely talked about his first impressions on “Ang Lihim ng Libro”. “Napakaganda ng production,” he said to Sir Jun and Jomike. “I’m sure napakaganda rin ng pagkasulat. Congratulations sa inyong dalawa!”
As for me, what was my first reaction when I saw the book cover of Moymoy Lulumboy 5? “Ay pink! Favorite ko!!!” (I know, I know! It’s not exactly the deepest or most literary of comments, but if you knew how much I love the color pink and how much I am fascinated by book covers in general, you would understand that I was actually giving a big compliment haha). Seriously though, I was excited at the thought of enjoying a more complex and layered Moymoy story when I received my copy of “Ang Lihim ng Libro”.
