AKLAT AWARDS 2018: AN APPRECIATION OF FILIPINO BOOKS

By Lauren V. Macaraeg #LaurenMacDoodles

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the Aklat Awards 2018! As we watched the awards ceremony last January 27, 2018, Saturday at the Precious Pages Event Center at the JRich/Precious Pages Building, I was surprised to realize that it’s been one year and one month already since the Aklat Awards 2016. Time flies, just like it does when you are reading an engrossing book and you barely notice how much time has passed already.

Speaking of engrossing books, here are this year’s winners for the Lampara Books categories:

Most Favorite Writer (Lampara): Pamela Imperial

Most Favorite Illustrator (Lampara): Aaron Asis

Most Favorite Children’s Book (Lampara): “Ang Supremo at ang Kuweba” by April Jade Biglaen and Ivan Reverente

The whole Precious Pages team, including our publisher Mr. Segundo “Jun” Matias, Ms. Aiko Buduan Salazar, Ms. Edith Garcia, Ms. Hazel Daga-Ang, Ms. Toni Velasco, Mr. Carlos Manalansan, Mr. Abet Cruz and Mr. Ainte Catubig, gave their best efforts to make the Aklat Awards 2018 an exciting event for everyone.

And their efforts were definitely worth it. When we try to acknowledge the merits of remarkable books by Filipino writers and illustrators, the true winners are Filipino readers, whom we encourage to appreciate Filipino books that are “sariling atin”. The question posed during the event says it all: “Bakit hindi corny ang magbasa ng Tagalog?”

It was doubly fun to watch the Aklat Awards 2018 because of the thrill of the revelation of winners and also because I was surrounded by writers, illustrators, Lampara friends, and readers.

My lovely seatmates at the event were librarian and author Ms. Zarah Gagatiga, art expert Ms. Alice Panares, and illustrator Ms. Bernadette Solina Wolf.

I also got to enjoy conversations about books and beyond (plus coffee and cake!) with fellow authors, Mr. Rhandee Garlitos, Yellowbelle Duaqui, Genaro R. Gojo Cruz, Mark Raywin Tome, illustrator and artist Dominic “Domz” Agsaway, and our Lampara Books hosts, Sir Jun, Ms. Aiko and Abet, at the Writer’s Lounge and at the atrium after the program. And of course, we had a great time with the rest of the Lampara writers and illustrators during the Lampara Get-Together Party that same morning. The best company at book events are definitely book lovers!
